Research

The pancreatic alpha cells and beta cells secrete glucagon and insulin respectively, which are counter-regulatory hormones to balance the glucose levels and ensure euglycaemia. Abnormal secretion of glucagon and insulin hormones is a hallmark of type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and so both cell types play a significant role in diabetes. In combination with zebrafish and mouse models, our research focus on:

1.The physiological and pathophysiological functions of pancreatic alpha cell

2.The role of glucagon-glucagon receptor pathway in the regulation of metabolism.

3.Screening and identification of led-drugs for induction of pancreatic beta cell regeneration.

Current Members

PI Mingyu Li P.h. D

Dr. Mingyu Li got his bachelor degree and master degree from Ocean University of China in 2003 and 2006. He received his Ph.D from same school in 2010. From 2010 to 2011, he worked as assistant scientist in Third Institute of Oceanography of State Oceanic Administration. In 2011, he moved to Vanderbilt University Medical Center and began his postdoctoral research training until 2016. He joined the School of Pharmaceutical Science of Xiamen University as an associate professor in 2016. He has published high-quality papers in Cell Metabolism, Trends in Genetics, Diabetes, British Journal Pharmacology and so on. He is the associated editor of Frontiers in Endocrinology. He is also the peer reviewer of several journals, including eLife and Phytomedicine.

Xuanxuan Bai Doctoral student

I am from Hunan Province, and completed my undergraduate degree at University of Xiamen University (2016-2020). I then joined Pharmaceutical Science Program of XMU and Li Lab as PhD student in 2021, where I am studying the role of glucagon receptor signaling in hepatic mitochondrial function and amino acid metabolism. Beyond the lab, I like listening to music, watching movies, and trying new food.

Zhehui Li Doctoral student

I am originally from Jilin Province, China. I joined Xiamen University in 2016, where I completed my undergraduate studies (2016–2020), followed by my master’s training (2021–2024), and I am currently pursuing my Ph.D. (2024–present). I have been a member of the Li Lab since 2019. My research focuses on the dynamic functional changes of pancreatic α cells during the progression of type 1 diabetes, as well as the underlying molecular mechanisms. I am also interested in the fundamental biology of pancreatic α cells. Outside the lab, I am a big fan of Pokémon, including games, merchandise, and related media. My favorite Pokémon is Metagross.

Chunling Ma Doctoral student

I am from Guangdong Province and completed my undergraduate studies at Southern Medical University (2018–2023). In 2024, I began my combined master’s and PhD program in the Li Lab, where I am currently investigating the mechanisms of glucagon secretion. Outside the lab, I enjoy playing mahjong and cuddling with cats.

Tongyu Zhang Doctoral student

I am from Shanxi Province, and completed my master degree at University of Xiamen University (2023-2026). I will then joined Pharmaceutical Science Program of XMU and Li Lab as doctor student in 2026.

Xinyun Wu Master student

I am from Chongqing City. I completed my undergraduate studies at Ocean University of China from 2019 to 2023. In 2024, I joined the Li Laboratory at the School of Pharmacy, Xiamen University, to pursue a master's degree, focusing on the antigen-presenting function of pancreatic alpha cells in type 1 diabetes. Outside the laboratory, I enjoy hiking.

Xin Wang Master student

I am from AnHui Province, and completed my undergraduate degree at Ocean University of China (2019-2023). I then joined Pharmaceutical Science Program of XMU and Li Lab as master student in 2023, where I am researching LNP-mRNA vaccines and screening compounds that promote the transdifferentiation of pancreatic alpha cells. I also enjoy mountain climbing and photography.

Yan Huang Master student

I am from Hunan Province, and completed my undergraduate degree at University of Xiamen University (2020-2024). I then joined Pharmaceutical Science Program of XMU and Li Lab as master student in 2024, where I am studying the component of glucagon secretion granule. Beyond the lab, I like drawing and hiking.

Qi Ren Master student

I am originally from Anhui Province and earned my Bachelor’s degree from Xiangya School of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Central South University(2020-2024). In 2024, I joined Professor Li’s lab at Xiamen University School of Pharmaceutical Sciences to pursue my Master’s degree. My research currently focuses on the role of amino acid transporters in pancreatic alpha-cell secretion and the underlying mechanisms. Outside the lab, I am an avid traveler and enjoy delving into works of philosophy and psychology.

Qingfan Zeng Master student

I am from Fujian Province, and completed my undergraduate degree at University of Xiamen University (2021-2025). I then joined Pharmaceutical Science Program of XMU and Li Lab as master student in 2025, where I am studying the knowledge of diabetes. Beyond the lab, I like swiming and running.

Qianyi Xi Master student

I am from Heilongjiang Province, and completed my undergraduate degree at Xiamen University (2021–2025). I then joined the Pharmaceutical Science Program at XMU and Li Lab as a master student in 2025, where I am studying mechanisms related to diabetes disease. Beyond the lab, I enjoy playing the piano, designing, and street dancing.

Yanlong Liu Master student

I am from Shanxi Province, and completed my undergraduate degree at University of Shanxi University (2021-2025). I then joined Pharmaceutical Science Program of XMU and Li Lab as master student in 2025, where I am studying the effect of candidate drugs on α-cell to β-cell transdifferentiation using gcg-icre;ROSA lineage tracing mouse models. Beyond the lab, I like exercising and reading.
